About Dr. Matthew Donlan

Dr. Matthew Donlan is a Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC I) with extensive experience across clinical care, executive leadership, academic instruction, and behavioral health consulting. His work focuses on practical, evidence-based treatment for substance use, anxiety, depression, trauma, and co-occurring disorders.
Dr. Donlan opened Donlan Counseling Services in 2021 after transitioning from his role as Chief Executive Officer of the Addiction Treatment Center of New England, where he helped shape and expand Medication-Assisted Treatment and integrated behavioral health services. Since then, he has continued to work clinically while also serving as a consultant to treatment programs across Massachusetts.
In 2025, Dr. Donlan served as Consultant and Clinical Director at New Growth Recovery in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he assisted with staff hiring, patient and employee handbook development, scheduling and curriculum design, BSAS licensure, business development, and Joint Commission accreditation. His consulting work supports organizations at all stages of development, from startup through accreditation and program expansion.
Alongside his clinical and consulting work, Dr. Donlan is a Visiting Clinical Professor at Regis College’s Young School of Nursing and has previously co-instructed undergraduate and graduate psychology courses while completing his doctoral training at Arizona State University. He holds a Doctorate in Behavioral Health from Arizona State University, a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mental Health Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Dr. Donlan grew up in Boston and spent over a decade struggling with addiction before relocating to Cape Cod in 2002 as the first step in his recovery. Prior to entering the behavioral health field, he worked as a Union Ironworker with Local 7 in Boston, a role that supported him financially while he began his formal education in addiction counseling at UMass Boston and Cape Cod Community College. This mid-life career transition ultimately led him to clinical work at Gosnold on Cape Cod, followed by national experience with American Addiction Centers before returning to Massachusetts to assume executive leadership roles.
Dr. Donlan’s approach is direct, collaborative, and grounded in real-world experience. His work integrates advanced clinical training with a practical understanding of behavior change, accountability, and long-term recovery. Outside of his professional work, Dr. Donlan enjoys spending time with his family, staying active, and taking advantage of life on Cape Cod. He is an avid golfer and enjoys the beach, swimming, and time outdoors.
